While browsing the internet, I have noticed a wide range of techniques in communicating content on a web based interface. Some websites are very effective in communicating their content and some are quite the opposite.
Websites like wired.com , vbs.tv , ted.com are great examples of websites that are effective in communicating their chosen topics. They use proper and easily identifiable links, well thought out use of space, content is easily legible, and all of these sites contain archiving systems that allow users to easily search all previous entries.
When websites have bad interfaces, use ads and ad space inappropriately and use colour and text ineffectively, they tend to remain unnoticed, or deliberately forgotten. Canoe.com is a perfect example of a site that uses more than a few of these characteristics, which in turn will leave this site at more of an opportunity of failing in the future.
Simplicity, good consistent use of content, and a legible appealing interface seem to be the largest indicators as to why and how a website will be effective. I plan on using these “do’s and don’ts” as a means of helping my personal blog and site at becoming a useful tool to all potential viewers.
