Phase 2: platter/dolly design

Phase 2: platter/dolly design

This 3d model was used to visualize the most crucial and complex part of this drawing machine, the platter/dolly design.

Sketchup Design (rough)

This initial model was to roughly understand how the drawing machine would look after each necessary component was created. Though slight changes have since been made, this was a huge help in visualizing the overall function throughout this entire phase.

mpm25 – The Moment. (make a wish)

In the middle of the interior mountains of BC, a music festival commences in which I was lucky enough to experience called Shambhala. Although there is a number of displays and singular events continually commencing throughout the length of the festival, one exhibit stood out to me in a very personal way. A wishing tree located in the direct center of the festival. This tree has nothing more than pieces of paper hanging from its branches. The papers are to be used to anonymously express your most deepest wishes and desires.

It was on the last day of the festival where I actually took the time to write something and reflect upon all the previous messages. Though the entries were all different, there was a commonality between each listing. Each piece of paper was genuine, positive and selfless. Weirdly enough when I read these little pieces of paper, I was amazed by how centered, serene and happy I truly was. I knew going in to Shambhala that it was magical place, but I had no idea how much it would effect my persona from then on.

Since that very moment, I can truly say that I am more positive, happy and most importantly a lot more calm of a person.

One minute video (mpm16)

I have created a video instillation to push people to look beyond the conventional understandings of personal values. This piece will be expressed with the deliberate manipulation of both extremely focused and unfocused shots/scenes, with the subtle interplay of rhythmic instrumental music. This piece has been created to push potential viewers to redefine their own understandings of what really matters to themselves in life, beyond the reasons of family, money and vanity. The deliberate interplay between the highly focused shots and the unfocused shots will cause the viewer to (ideally) break their personal boundaries or potential stigmas that they have associated with similar questions of this nature.
The use of coloured lights over a blurred perspective which is contrasted from the highly focused (slowed down) footage of the interviews will entice the viewer to understand the subjective insinuations that take place due to the lack of overt dialogue. The concept is not to give an intended answer to the viewer, instead entice the viewer to question and ask themselves what the people on screen are saying/thinking. Though the theme is overtly subtle, I believe that the people who are willing to look beyond the aesthetic and approach this question with a genuine attitude will quickly understand the brevity of this videos intended nature.
Juxtaposing the blurred frames against the clean frames allows the viewer to see the inherent purpose of this film, and how its answer is as fundamentally broad as the question initially posed. Taking two completely different styles of filming and cohesively putting them together in a short allows an implicit understanding of the theme that can be understood in a plethora of ways. Life is an experience that has undefined meanings and understandings, and the purpose of this film is to push the viewer to question not only how other people may experience life but how life in general is an experience.

Audio Podcast (mpm16)

spells.mp3

Music can have a tremendous influence over one’s perceptions and/or experience and I have in turn recorded an audio short of a song called “spells”. I have chosen this song to illustrate the difference in which one can experience and ultimately personify instrumental audio on an individual basis. Instrumental music has tremendous potential when delivered effectively because of its ability to relate to anyone regardless of personal taste, culture or creed. Though this song is deliberate in style and sound, the purpose of this audio short is to express how instrumental work can appeal to peoples experiences, instead of just their respective musical tastes.

“Spells” has been deliberately created with the intention of being relatable to one’s experience, by creating strong feelings and in turn memories or desires of the listener. This song has an uplifting undertone throughout to engage the listener into their own mind, their own past or potential experiences, yet contains vague enough rhythms to entice alternate interpretation. Though this song was created with intent of being “pleasing” to the ear, the deliberate vague rhythms and tones allow the listener to experience more then just an audio recording, rather an audio experience.

Acoustic instrumental works can have a variety of outcomes due to the nature in which it is conceptualized and produced. The intended vague approach instrumental work possesses has a profound influence over far more then musical taste because of the emotional resonance instilled in the lack of overt intention. Music can have purpose to individuals for a number of reasons, mostly appealing to people on a personal basis and this audio short illustrates that music is far more then appealing or desired sounds. It instills feelings and experiences in us that can transcend the boundaries of reality and imagination.

Assignment 1: Step 4

My overall experience of researching, understanding and ultimately improving my digital footprint has been an interesting one. At the beginning of this project I never really considered the gravity of what an online ‘existence’ or footprint could be. I guess I always understood the need for a website and such, but I never really considered the integral social aspects the internet now plays within the professional world (web 2.0). Ironically, now I feel as though this simple fact is obvious, which I guess in its own right is a testament to how far I’ve come.

The technical aspects of this project for me though, haven’t been as interesting. Trial and error has been my only effective way of coming to answers. I still am having troubles with getting a top result on certain search engines (google), but with others I am fine (bing, yahoo). This sort of pattern has been consistent throughout, so I guess its a matter of ebb and flow, which is fine with me. I have been noticing that every time I search myself more and more content is popping up, which leaves me in a bizarre position. I like that my presence is growing, yet I feel that this notion brings responsibility that I’m not sure I want..just yet.

All in all, this experience has been quite the eye opener, in ways I guess I never saw coming. I originally thought that this project was going to teach me the technical aspects of the internet, which it has, but I have also gained a greater understanding of how and why the internet runs the way it does.

website is up.
